Infections represent 13.5% of all ED visits in older adults, which is more than both myocardial infarction and chronic heart failure combined! They also have increased morbidity and mortality, partly due to delay in diagnosis from atypical presentation & difficulty in obtaining an accurate history, in addition to underlying comorbidities and MDROs in these complex older patients.
