Elder mistreatment affects 1 in 10 older adults, but only 1 in 1000 older adults presenting in the emergency department are diagnosed with elder mistreatment.

Emergency clinicians are looking for resources to address this serious issue, so we have curated a list for you from our library. Below we highlight some useful implementation and education resources to help you and your fellow clinicians identify and address elder mistreatment.

The Elder Mistreatment Emergency Department (EMED) Toolkit

The EMED Toolkit and the associated series of educational modules are essential resources for any emergency department looking to improve their elder mistreatment identification and protocols. Fully supported by the Education Development Center and created by the National Collaboratory to address Elder Mistreatment, this comprehensive resource is the best way to implement a quality improvement project and make change at your hospital or system level.

Education and Toolkit Training Program

The creators of the EMED toolkit put together a training program for implementing the toolkit. This makes implementation and whole-team training feasible for any emergency department.

They have also expertly added a Critical Topics in Elder Mistreatment learning series that addresses how elder mistreatment intersects with other domains of geriatric care.
