An important thing to remember as you try to improve your rural or critical access emergency department’s ability to care for the older adults in your community is that you can make simple, low-cost changes and they can make a very big difference.
Dr. Kevin Wasko, in his role with the Saskatchewan Health Authorita wants you to remember three things:
- Changes don’t need to be complex or extensive: basic and practical changes will have an impact.
- Universal screening of seniors presenting to the ED is a proactive way to identify those living at risk.
- System integration at the local level improves care for seniors.
