Sharing Insights With Ontario Health
On September 23, 2026, the Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC) presented as part of Ontario Health’s Delirium Aware Safer Healthcare (DASH) learning series. The session drew attention from primarily hospital administrators and quality leaders, from roughly 105 hospitals and emergency departments in Ontario.
About DASH
DASH is a collaborative priority campaign run by Ontario Health’s Clinical Quality team. Now in its third year, DASH works to reduce hospital-acquired delirium while informing a provincial strategy around frailty in older adults.
The invitation to GEDC came after Ontario Health’s ED sites expressed strong interest in strengthening age-friendly emergency care. This reflects a broader provincial push to equip EDs with practical strategies for addressing delirium.
Presentation Summary
GEDC made the case for why geriatric emergency care matters to patients, caregivers, hospitals, and the broader health system. Drawing on evidence from health systems around the world, they examined the clinical and financial impact of geriatric-focused care.
The presentation also showed how Ontario’s hospital quality standards already align with GEDA’s care model. This was especially true for delirium, hip fracture, and dementia care. In other words, Ontario hospitals already have much of the clinical groundwork in place. The next step is implementing ED tools and infrastructure to put it all into practice.
