The Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC) congratulates the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) on the 2026 ASAE Power of Associations Summit Award, announced July 28 for ACEP’s Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) program.
GEDA accreditation has become the national benchmark for treating older adults well in the emergency department. Its recognition by ASAE, which honors associations that drive innovative programs, partnerships, and initiatives that demonstrate the unique ability to solve complex challenges, strengthen industries, and improve lives.
The concept of a geriatric emergency department has developed in the past decade as hospitals recognize that one size ED care does not fit all. It reflects how far the geriatric emergency care movement has come, from a niche concern a decade ago to a standard now used by hundreds of EDs nationwide, backed by evidence of lives saved and costs avoided.
“Celebrating GEDA and ACEP is celebrating the geriatric emergency department movement in its entirety,” said Kevin Biese, MD, Co-Founder of GEDC. “This award belongs to every hospital, clinician, and organization that has helped build a model of emergency care that finally meets older adults where they are.”
GEDC helps hospitals reach the GEDA accreditation and build the case that geriatric-focused emergency care is essential. Every accreditation ACEP awards, every hospital that adopts these practices, and every honor like this one adds momentum toward all emergency departments creating better geriatric emergency care for their patients.
