About GEDC
The Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative is a worldwide network of stakeholders dedicated to improving the quality of emergency care for older adults.
The Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC) was developed in 2014, comprised of 9 leading healthcare systems, all with a commitment to the advancement of high-quality emergency care for older people.
Age-Friendly Health Systems is an initiative of The John A. Hartford Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in partnership with the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA).
It’s based on the 4Ms Framework for better care for older adults across all healthcare settings. https://www.johnahartford.org/grants-strategy/current-strategies/age-friendly/age-friendly-care
Care that is safe and based on what research shows are the most important things to pay attention to as we get older – the 4Ms: what Matters, Medication, Mentation and Mobility.
Accreditation
The Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) program is an ACEP-governed national accreditation organization which strives to improve the care of older adults presenting to the emergency department. This accreditation system promotes the goals of quality care for older people: enhanced staffing and education; geriatric-focused policies and protocols including transitions of care; quality improvement and metrics; and optimal preparation of the physical environment.
Geriatric ED accreditation is a path many hospitals and health systems are looking to pursue. Our collaborative works alongside hospitals seeking GEDA accreditation and can help them achieve their goals. Learn more about our consulting services.
All hospitals can make quality improvements to better serve the older adults in their community. At GEDC, we hope all hospitals will strive to do their best to improve the care provided to older adults. Accreditation provides a framework and pathway for your ED to do just that.
GEDA Accreditation is an excellent way to convey to your patients, colleagues, and community that your ED cares about the service they provide to older patients.
Preparing for accreditation allows the hospital and ED to focus on the needs of this complex and growing population and to ensure that the resources available to the ED meet the needs of the patients they serve. Early data from existing models of geriatric emergency care – models that promote best clinical practices and create a more positive and sensitive physical environment – show they have the potential to improve health outcomes, coordinate care more effectively, and reduce costs.
