Course Description
Focused on enhancing quality of care at the end of life, this session equips Emergency Department clinicians and staff with the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, clinically appropriate care for seriously ill older adults. Participants will learn to anticipate care needs based on functional trajectories and apply essential symptom management strategies—including interventions for nausea, secretions, and agitation. The module emphasizes aligning treatment decisions with the patient’s goals and values.

- Identify what matters most to patients and families to align emergency care with their values and goals.
- Apply a multi-modal, person-centered approach to acute symptom management in the ED.
- Demonstrate compassionate communication and integrate palliative care principles to support patients with serious illness and their families.
