Falls are the leading cause of injury and death among older adults. In this module, you will learn about the morbidity and mortality associated with falls, how normal changes in aging predispose a person to fall, and common clinical challenges in assessing an older adult who has fallen.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, ED care providers will be able to:

  • Describe the key components of a falls history for an older patient.
  • Express the significance that fall-related injury incurs on an older adult’s morbidity, mortality risk, quality of life, independence, and finances.
  • List risk factors for older adult falls, and reasons why older adults are predisposed to falling.
