The GEDC Skills Fair – Falls & Mobility Module 4

In this module, we will explore normal age-related changes to communication and strategies for addressing communication barriers in the ED. We will look at how clinician-to-patient communication can impact patient perception and outcomes and introduce strategies for improving clinician-to-patient communication in the ED. We will also briefly look at using person-centred language in the ED to help improve perceptions among clinicians.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, ED care providers will be able to:

  • Apply geriatric principles to the care of an older adult who has fallen in a case study.
  • List medication classes that increase the risk of falls in older adults.
  • List functional assessment tools that are appropriate for use in the emergency department.
  • Describe the types of mobility assessments that can be performed for patients presenting after a fall.
