Course Description
Older adults represent a rapidly growing and complex patient population in emergency medicine. This session introduces a practical, syndrome-informed approach to geriatric care in the ED, emphasizing how conditions like delirium, polypharmacy, frailty, and falls can complicate diagnosis and treatment. Learners will explore the “5Ms” of Age-Friendly Care as a guiding framework. The session also highlights systems-based strategies to support safe transitions of care, reduce harm, and align emergency care with older adults’ goals and values.
Learning Objectives
- Apply the 5Ms framework to guide diagnosis, management, and care planning for older adults in the ED.
- Recognize how geriatric syndromes contribute to diagnostic complexity and clinical risk.
- Identify opportunities within the ED to improve care transitions and align treatment with patient goals.
Run Time: ~30 minutes
