US Preventative Services Task Force 2018 Recommendations

For community-dwelling adults ≥65

Exercise – B

  • mostly group exercise with emphasis on gait, balance, and functional training
  • 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise per week
  • 2X/week strength training and ≥3 times per week balance training for patients at risk for falling

Multifactorial falls prevention interventions – C

  • initial assessment of modifiable risk factors for falls
  • subsequent customized interventions for each patient based on issues identified in the initial assessment
  • after single interventions, sufficient evidence is lacking for or against their use to prevent falls in community-dwelling older adults when offered alone and not in the context of a multifactorial intervention

NOTE

Recommend against calcium and vitamin D supplementation due to insufficient evidence that it reduces fractures.

B, USPSTF recommends; high certainty that net benefit is moderate, or moderate certainty that net benefit is moderate to substantial.

C, USPSTF selectively recommends based on professional judgment and patient preferences; at least moderate certainty that net benefit is small.
